Hanger and Baldric from the Royal Museum of Scotland

Early 17th C. German Sword Hanger

This piece is missing the belt but still includes the stabilization strap.  The general dimensions are 12 1/2  by 8 inches.  The front stabilization strap is 17 1/2 inches.  The hanger is made of what looks like a vegetable tanned leather and heavy fabric.

This picture shows the frontof the hanger.  Note that the hanger bucckles do not have a tang allowing the hanger to naturally tighten with the weight of the sword.  The design on the hanger front is made by sewing the pattern into the leather.

16th to 17th C. Baldric

This baldric was constructed of a chamois like leather.  The chest buckle is 2 1/2 inches wide.  The loops are 3/4 inch wide.  The extra buckles on the hanger portion are 1 1/4 inches wide.  It is approximately 3 inches across each hanger.  The baldric is constructed from a front and back piece of leather that is held together with the decorative stitching.
