Marozzo provides a progression that may be used to practice the various
guards and some attacks. The following is a list of the progressions
and how to move from one to the next. Note, that in the illustrations
not only are bucklers used but also capes and daggers as well as the single
sword alone.
Guardia
di Coda Lunga E Stretta
Start in this guard with the buckler held out in front of the body with
the arm extended. Attack with a mandritta squalenbratto and pass
the left foot forward.
Cinghiara
Porta di Ferro Stretta
In this guard the buckler should be close to the body and high.
Attack with a falso manco and pass the right foot forward.
Guardia
Alta
The buckler should be out in front of the body with the arm extended.
Pass the left foot forward and cut downwards with the sword.
Guardia
di Coda Lunga e Alta
The buckler should still be extended. Attack with a mandritta
fendente and pass the right foot forward.
Porta di Ferro Stretta
overo Larga
Pass the left foot forward and extend the sword out behind the body.
Guardia di Coda Lunga
e Distesa
Pass the right foot forward and make an oblique upwards cut with the
false edge of the blade.
Guardia di Testa
Pass the left foot forward and attack with a punta riversa.
Guardia d'Intrare
Pass the right foot forward and attack with a roversa squalembratto.
Guardia di Coda Lunga
e Larga
Pass the left foot forward and raise the sword.
Becca Possa
Pass the right foot forward and attack with a point thrust (palm should
be up).
Guardia di Faccia
Pass back two steps and raise sword.
